A little bit about me
Hi, I am Marla. I am a painter, illustrator and a surface pattern designer.
My love of art goes back as far as I can remember. I have always drawn and painted. Having grown up in the beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, I am naturally drawn to vibrant colours, and rich textures. My main inspiration is nature. I am especially drawn to the flowers and birds in my garden.
My journey began far from the studio. Having immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1968, with formal training as a graphic designer, life chose a different path - into the skies as a licensed commercial pilot and flight instructor.
Now Working full time as an artist and surface pattern designer, I paint primarily in oils and watercolours. My subjects are often botanicals and rural landscapes that surround me - scenes where simplicity and beauty meet.
Whether it’s the delicate curve of a petal or the quiet charm of a rural village, my work is guided by the desire to capture the calm and tranquility found in nature.
Through my paintings I invite the viewer to slow down, take a breath and find comfort in the gentle moments that are so difficult to find in today’s turbulent world.
My pattern designs decorate pillows, textiles, wallpaper and a host of other items. I am currently exploring an abstract intuitive style, but feel that I am just getting started. It is never too late to learn, and I am enthusiastic and excited about where I will be led next. I hope that I can look forward to many more years of productive and creative endeavours.
